The Book of Eli Review

Posted: June 6, 2010 in Hollywood Wanted, Reviews

Tagline: Some will kill to have it. He will kill to protect it.
Directors: Hughes Brothers
Genre: Action | Adventure | Drama | Thriller
Cast: Denzel Washington, Gary Oldman, Mila Kunis
Plot: A post-apocalyptic tale, in which a lone man fights his way across America in order to protect a sacred book that holds the secrets to saving humankind.

What I say: It’s a post apocalyptic environment. We’ve played the game- Fallout 3. We’ve also seen the movie- I’m Legend. The concept is same old, same old. The script hosts to emerge as a religious propaganda. It seems so illogical that a man sets to west and is saved by god just because he saved a book till it’s REPUBLISHED! Come on! He’s not a messiah. He helps people, he doesn’t help people.
Hughes Brothers did the last film in 2001- From Hell. It seems ages ago. Nothing remarkable in their index. So, I had a little expectations from the movie which were due to the trailers. The trailer we have seen is just to create a sense of fear and nothingness. The movie is different. Many logical mistakes. Post Apocalypse it’s been 30 winters and people still manage to gather food (not by hunting). They even got petrols!

The cinematography and action sequence are real good. The movie is shot in a monotonic brown. There has been a lot of occasions where i thought- “Oh snap!” Overall this film was a transparent vehicle for religious cheer leading and not much more. Unless you go into the film with low expectations, you’ll probably walk out wishing the Hughes brothers disappeared for another nine years.

The verdict?

1 pt for lickety Mila Kunis, 3 for the “pause-&-capture” cinematography and 1 for action sequence. 5/10
